There’s something strange about the latest update to ChatGPT

OpenAI announced that it has implemented a new version of its GPT-4o large language model to drive its ChatGPT chatbot, but it has declined to specify exactly how the updated model differs from its predecessor.

“To be clear, this is an improvement to GPT-4o and not a new frontier model,” the company posted on X (formerly Twitter) Monday.

there's a new GPT-4o model out in ChatGPT since last week. hope you all are enjoying it and check it out if you haven't! we think you'll like it 😃

“We’ve introduced an update to GPT-4o that we’ve found, through experiment results and qualitative feedback, ChatGPT users tend to prefer,” the company wrote in its Model Release Notes. “It’s not a new frontier-class model. Although we’d like to tell you exactly how the model responses are different, figuring out how to granularly benchmark and communicate model behavior improvements is an ongoing area of research in itself (which we’re working on!).”

In the absence of specific details from the company, many users have, unsurprisingly, begun speculating as to the nature of the changes and whether they represent new features. X user @misaligned_agi took to social media to venture that the new update had implemented a multistep reasoning method rather than an entirely new model.

OpenAI quickly put the kibosh on that line of thinking, with a spokesperson telling VentureBeat that it wasn’t in fact a new reasoning process and that the behavior that @misaligned_agi observed could have been triggered by the structure of their prompt.

Other users also voiced their theories on social media, arguing that GPT-4o recently began behaving in subtly different and better ways, and that its image-generating quality had improved. “For the first time in a long time, it provided better ‘vibes’ on an output than 3.5 Sonnet,” observed X user @mattshumer_

After allowing users to take their best guesses at defining the new iteration, which OpenAI is calling ChatGPT-4o-latest, the company added a few scant details on its Models page on Wednesday.

Described as a “dynamic model continuously updated to the current version of GPT-4o in ChatGPT,” GPT-4o-latest has a knowledge cutoff of October 2023, and can accommodate 128,000 tokens, or 96,000 words, per conversation, just as the previous GPT-40 version did. It can output 16,384 tokens, or 12,288 words, on par with the newer GPT-40-mini model and roughly quadruple what the older GPT-4o can do.

Unfortunately, hard stats like these don’t provide insight into what the new model is actually capable of, and, apparently, neither will its developers.

Your ChatGPT conversation history is now searchable
ChatGPT chat search

OpenAI debuted a new way to more efficiently manage your growing ChatGPT chat history on Tuesday: a search function for the web app. With it, you’ll be able to quickly surface previous references and chats to cite within your current ChatGPT conversation.

“We’re starting to roll out the ability to search through your chat history on ChatGPT web,” the company announced via a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Now you can quickly & easily bring up a chat to reference, or pick up a chat where you left off.”

GPT-5: everything we know so far about OpenAI’s next frontier model
A MacBook Pro on a desk with ChatGPT's website showing on its display.

There’s perhaps no product more hotly anticipated in tech right now than GPT-5. Rumors about it have been circulating ever since the release of GPT-4, OpenAI’s groundbreaking foundational model that’s been the basis of everything the company has launched over the past year, such as GPT-4o, Advanced Voice Mode, and the OpenAI o1-preview.

Those are all interesting in their own right, but a true successor to GPT-4 is still yet to come. Now that it’s been over a year a half since GPT-4’s release, buzz around a next-gen model has never been stronger.
When will GPT-5 be released?
OpenAI has continued a rapid rate of progress on its LLMs. GPT-4 debuted on March 14, 2023, which came just four months after GPT-3.5 launched alongside ChatGPT. OpenAI has yet to set a specific release date for GPT-5, though rumors have circulated online that the new model could arrive as soon as late 2024.

OpenAI could release its next-generation model by December
ChatGPT giving a response about its knowledge cutoff.

OpenAI plans to release its next-generation frontier model, code-named Orion and rumored to actually be GPT-5, by December, according to an exclusive report from The Verge. However, OpenAI boss Sam Altman is already pushing back.

According to “sources familiar with the plan,” Orion will not initially be released to the general public, as the previous GPT-4 variants were. Instead, the company intends to hand the new model over to select businesses and partners, who will then use it as a platform to build their own products and services. This is the same strategy that Nvidia is pursuing with its NVLM 1.0 family of large language models (LLMs).
